The new Medicaid Integrity Program (MIP) was created by the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 as an effort to halt theft, inappropriate use and simple mistakes that drain critical Medicaid program dollars that could otherwise be spent to safeguard the health and welfare of Medicaid clients. Congress directed the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to establish the MIP and as a result, a dramatic increase in resources was provided to CMS in order to combat fraud, waste and abuse in the Medicaid program.
